Affiliate Disclosure

HomeIndependenceGuide.com is reader-supported. When you click a link on our site and make a purchase, we may earn a commission, at no additional cost to you. This page explains exactly how that works and how we protect the integrity of our recommendations.

1. What Is an Affiliate Link?

An affiliate link is a URL that includes a unique tracking code identifying HomeIndependenceGuide.com as the referring site. When you click one of our affiliate links and complete a purchase within a qualifying window (typically 24 hours for Amazon), the retailer pays us a small percentage of the sale price as a referral fee.

The price you pay is identical whether you use our link or navigate directly to the retailer's site. Affiliate commissions are paid by the retailer, not added to your purchase price.

2. Affiliate Programmes We Use

Amazon Associates

HomeIndependenceGuide.com is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

Our Amazon affiliate tag is retirementg03-20. Links containing tag=retirementg03-20 in the URL are affiliate links to Amazon.

Other programmes

We may from time to time participate in affiliate programmes offered by other retailers or service providers relevant to the senior home safety and aging-in-place market. When we do, we will ensure all affiliate links are clearly identifiable and that our editorial standards (described below) apply equally to all affiliated products.

3. How We Earn Commissions

We earn commissions when:

• You click an affiliate link on our site and purchase the linked product within the qualifying window
• You click an affiliate link on our site and purchase a different product during the same session (Amazon Associates pays commissions on all qualifying purchases made within 24 hours of clicking our link, not only the linked product)

We do not earn commissions from:

• Purchases made after the qualifying window expires
• Products you return for a refund
• Purchases made on non-affiliated retailers

Typical Amazon Associates commission rates range from 1% to 10% depending on product category. For most home safety and medical products covered on this site, the commission rate is approximately 3–5%.

4. Our Editorial Independence Commitment

Our editorial process is independent of our affiliate relationships. Specifically:

• We do not accept payment to rank products favourably. No manufacturer or retailer can pay to improve their position in our reviews or comparisons.
• We do not accept free products in exchange for positive reviews. If we receive a product sample for evaluation, we disclose it and it does not guarantee positive coverage.
• Affiliate availability does not determine coverage. We cover products that are genuinely useful for our readers regardless of whether an affiliate programme exists for them.
• Negative findings are published. If a product scores poorly in our evaluation, we say so. Even if it would earn us a higher commission than the top-rated alternative.
• Our scores are based on published criteria. See Section 5 below for how we rate products.

5. How We Rate Products

Our product scores are based on five weighted criteria:

• Safety and reliability (30%), weight ratings, material quality, installation requirements, ADA compliance, and failure modes
• Value for money (25%), price relative to comparable alternatives, total cost of ownership, warranty coverage
• Ease of use (20%), setup complexity, day-to-day usability for adults with limited mobility or dexterity, clarity of instructions
• Buyer satisfaction (15%), synthesis of verified buyer reviews across major retail platforms, analysed for common praise and complaint themes
• Design and dignity (10%), whether the product can blend into a home environment without looking institutional, and whether users are likely to actually use it

Scores are assigned by the HomeIndependenceGuide.com research team and reviewed periodically as new buyer feedback and product updates become available.

6. Our AI Review Tool

The AI-powered product review tool on our Trusted Reviews page and homepage generates summaries by synthesising patterns from buyer review data. It is not a verbatim reproduction of individual reviews.

• The tool is powered by Anthropic's Claude AI model via a secure server-side API connection
• The tool does not generate paid or sponsored content, results are not influenced by affiliate relationships
• AI-generated summaries reflect general buyer sentiment patterns and should be used as a starting point for research, not as a substitute for reading individual reviews or consulting a healthcare professional for medical decisions
• We do not receive compensation from any brand for favourable AI-generated summaries

7. What We Will Never Do

• Accept money to publish a positive review or suppress a negative one
• Recommend a product we believe is unsafe or unsuitable for our readers
• Alter our editorial scores based on commission rates
• Present sponsored content as independent editorial content without clear disclosure
• Recommend a product solely because it offers a higher commission than better alternatives
